Dubai Rotating Skyscraper Turns Heads on YouTube

In a city where almost anything is possible, yet another improbable building is ready to take shape. A 60+ story tower will have individually rotating floors and be powered by wind turbines located between the floors. It is currently scheduled to begin construction in 2008 and be completed some two years later.

Perhaps even more amazing, this is not even the first rotating skyscraper to be announced for Dubai. A 30 story tall, 200 unit condominium tower was announced late last year. Solar panels will drive that building, which will rotate once a week to provide every unit with 360 degree views. This new, taller building will have each floor able to rotate once every 90 minutes. The top five floors will have their rotations controlled by the residents in those units, while the rest of the building will be programmed via the architect or building manager.

Architect David Fisher conceived the Twirling Tower idea and has assembled a design team of top-notch professionals, including Leslie Robertson. "It’s not rocket science," says Mr. Robertson of the building’s structure. "It’s a basic structural core, a concrete silo and the doughnuts that wander around. To me, it’s largely an amount of craftsmanship – a matter of putting it together in thoughtful way so it’s constructed quickly, reliably and with low ongoing maintenance costs." Mr. Robertson is quoted in an article in The Wall Street Journal.

Dubai currently has the tallest free standing man made structure in the world, the Burj Dubai. This will be a combination hotel, residence and commercial building when complete. The Emirate also has The World, a man-made island chain shaped like a map of the world, the Palm Islands, and the world’s first underwater hotel. This YouTube clip from CNBC also gives the viewer a visual perspective of Fisher’s concept.
